An Extreme Escape from Rice

Leaving China tomorrow to go to Azerbaijan and visit my brother, who is in the Peace Corps there.  I’m not sure what to think of Azerbaijan at the moment, however, from my brother’s most recent post about “nar” or pomegranates being everywhere I think it should be tasty.  In addition, it will just be nice to be in a place where rice is not on the menu at every meal.  The only concern now is that with elections coming up, I might get turned away at the border and refused a visa.  Keep your fingers crossed!

Azerbaijan is a country that most people don’t know about very much.  It doesn’t help the image of your country when the first page of a simple Google image search for “Azerbaijan” yields the below results.  I’m going to post three pictures below …for good or bad…  Not sure what my overall impression should be from this; but if I can get to take a bath in brown sludge, I can’t be any worse off during the next 10 days than the poor people of Hungary.

  1. The crude oil bath could potentially be fun. I mean… if you’re into clogged pours and what not.

  2. It’s your own personal Gulf of Mexico! In Azerbaijan!
